Today is my turn in the Moda blog hop and I'm pretty excited.
As the theme for the blog hop is Hometown Buzz, I get to tell y'all about where I live, Austin, Texas. I really love my town and I do happen to think it is one of the best places to live, certainly in Texas, and probably in the US. So, I won't have any problem extolling its virtues.
I'm also psyched to share a free PDF block pattern and giveaway fabric. Because, who doesn't love that?
Rather than write you an essay about Austin, complete with topic sentence and three supporting paragraphs, as well as a well-stated conclusion (can you tell I have a kid in school?), I thought I would make a list of 5 of my most favorite things about Austin.
Here it is, in descending order:
5. Until his sad and untimely death recently, Leslie Cochran, usually known as just Leslie, ran for mayor of my fine town, always campaigning in outfits that featured his trademark leopard print thong.
4. Having an amazing trail that winds its way around the Colorado River right in the middle of town.
Last Saturday's buzz on the Town Lake trail: Did you see Lance (Armstrong) running on the trail?
3. More Tex-Mex restaurants than Starbucks. That's really what you want on every corner.
2. Live music, baby! Can you say Austin City Limits music festival AND South by Southwest? And that doesn't even count all the minor music festivals like the Keep Austin Weird Music Fesitval.
And...the number one reason I love Austin:
Hello! QuiltCon is here in February of 2013. How cool is that?
Another reason I'm excited to be a part of the blog hop is that it gives me an opportunity to tell and show you a bit about my new line, Simple Marks.
This shot actually features most, but not all of the colorways and patterns in my new line. My first collection, a stitch in color, included a cheater cloth which was incredibly fun....and popular. This collection has two. The prints are still playful and energetic, but the colors are a bit more fall-like. Perfect because these fabrics will be available in stores and online in November. Who coordinates these things? :)
To celebrate the hop, new fabrics, both mine and by the other talented designers at Moda, and just cause, the terrific folks at Moda are offering up this simple, yet contemporary block pattern for you to make.
Click here to get the PDF of the instructions for the Sew Sweet Sampler. I'm working on a mini quilt with four of these blocks and my mind is already planning how I'm going to supersize it.
As for the giveaway; check out these goodies:
I've got a charm pack to give away as well as two, 2 1/2" charm packlets(that is what you call teeny charm packs, right?). So, I'm going to pick two winners, one for the 5" charm squares and a second for the pair of 2 1/2" charm squares.
Now, it's your turn, leave a comment and I'll announce the winner in a few days.

Never been to Austin but I've heard lots of good things about it:) Love your new fabric line!
Malka- Being from San Francisco, I'm kind of used to strange people, but I guess every town has it's character(s). Unfortunately where I was born/raised has changed too much and now in certain parts of the city nudity is accepted which is why I seldom return there anymore. The colors in your new line are bright and vibrant. Thanks for sharing.
Simple Marks looks exciting. Did the Mayor runner ever win? Thanks for the chance. Linda C Holly Lake Ranch, TX

one of these days I might get to Texas as I am so close living on the florida gulf coast
I have had the pleasure of visiting Austin several times, as my brother & sister in law have moved there. What drove them to Austin, is that their oldest daughter lives there as well. Last year we spent several days there enjoying our the wedding of our niece. It was wonderful!
Your new line is very nice. Love the colors.
Your fabrics from your first line have graced many of my projects. I've enjoyed using your talents!

Austin is one of my top five Texas favorites...number three, actually, Denton being numero uno and New Braunfels being numero dos. It's a close contest though :).
Your new line is gorgeous and I am seriously delighted to find small prints included!

Congrats on the new line- its lovely! And Austin is on my list of places to get to some day- maybe next February if I'm lucky!
I really enjoy reading about your hometown!
I am crossing my fingers that I win! I was so sad that your previous line did not come to any fabric stores in my area. Yes, they were available online, but I'm allergic to credit cards. It keeps the debt down - especially for a fabric collector like me! I love all of your designs; keep up the awesomely colourful work!
Don't know much about Austin but it looks like a nice place. Simple Marks looks great in that star block.
I am from Belton, TX (and now live in Richardson). I went to Austin last week to take my Mom to have back surgery at Seton (on 38th). Dad enjoyed sitting by her window and looking at all of the people walking up and down Lamar and the other busy streets. Finally he decided that to live in Austin you must have 1) a tattoo, 2) a backpack and 3) a water bottle. Enjoy your day!
Great giveaway, the colors are gorgeous.
With 476 comments before me, I can only hope that Austin's 3-time appearance in the past 24 hours, all the way up here in New England, is a good luck charm to try out for your lovely giveaway. Austin is the setting for a novel I'm currently reading ("Close Your Eyes" by Austin-ite Amanda Eyre Ward); Poppytalk's 9/12/12 blog post about music scene; and then your giveaway post (love that pic of the mayoral candidate!). Gorgeous everything here - I love following your pics on flickr, too.
What beautiful fabric and a great giveaway! Thanks!
Hope to visit Austin on our trip in early 2013. Love reading on all the blog. What a great idea. Thanks,

Never been to Texas, but it's on my bucket list - I have seen pictures of Austin and it is something I must see and absorb. I hail from Northern Ontario, Canada (in the Naaarth, as we say), so some warm, sunny Texan sun might be just the thing!
What beautiful fabric! Thanks for the top 5 for Austin! I wish we had more tex-mex resturants... :)
Nothing Dull about Austin! Lucky Girl. Your patterns and fabric are delightful! So bright and cheerful, even in the Fall colors. Judy R

I have a son in Dallas and I always want to visit other cities. Unfortunately, everywhere is at least a day's drive and an overnight stay. Someday, Austin's on my bucket list.
I like the colors and patterns of your Simple Marks and like them with the white. Thanks for your designs!
Wish I could be in Austin in February. Aside from all the quilty fun, it would be much warmer there than here in Wyoming!
Couldn't really see any leopard in Leslie's thong...but we once drove through Austin on the way to San Antonio. Someday we would LOVE to visit! We live in Marion, Indiana, the home of the Quilters Hall of Fame!
My husband and I spent a weekend in Austin a few years ago. Great town. Great new fabric line

I LOVE your fabric!!! I have made 2 quilts with your fabric. Now I really LOVE the block with the new fabric. It's like having a banana split....the fabric and pattern is the ice cream and the topping is that you are from Austin. We just moved our son to Austin to go to grad school and I am coming down there for QuiltCon. I hope to see more of Austin this time. We did eat at Rudy's!!! Now we're from Chicago and we usually don't eat in a GARAGE, but boy was it good!!!! Well, here's hoping you pick me!
